I did it with a poorly constructed poll, which predicted that the winning category would be in the subject area of Atomic, Molecular, and/or Optical Physics; a close second in the vote was Astrophysics/Cosmology. And the real winner? “For the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantisation in an electric circuit.” I guess if you squint hard enough, that looks like atomic physics … but one is probably in need of spectacles at that point.

So I thought I would again turn the awesome power of the fediverse onto the question: what will be the subject area of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics?

This year’s announcement is just a week away, not earlier than 11:45 CEST on Tuesday, October 6. <sup id="mfn-content-00000000000005940000000000000000_7895-1" class="modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--expands-on-desktop " data-mfn="1" data-mfn-post-scope="00000000000005940000000000000000_7895">1https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/about/prize-announcement-dates/ I plan to wake up early and live blog again, as I did last year. Meanwhile, let’s look at what the fediverse has to say.

My poll last year was much as my poll this year: same broad categories and same poor construction. I asked fedizens to vote on the question of whether the prize would be in

Nuclear and/or Particle Physics

Atomic, Molecular, or Optical Physics

Condensed Matter and/or Materials

Astronomy, Astrophysics, or Cosmology

I also clarified that statistical physics (including machine or computational learning, as clarified by a participant) would fall under the “Condensed Matter and/or Materials”, as that subject falls somewhat broadly under that.

This year’s poll attracted 78 participants, compared to 42 last year. Not bad! Here are the results

Wow! Given the 78 participants, the statistical dead heat between the last three categories is a real “hedge your bets” situation. The clearest trend was the belief that nuclear/particle physics has not merited a prize this year (though, one must remember that prizes can be awarded to any living persons for any work to which they made significant contributions in the field, and which otherwise merit the prize … covering nearly a human lifetime of potentially unrewarded work).

Where people vocalized an opinion on the specific prize topic, we heard again a solid vote for the work of the Event Horizon Telescope in imaging the supermassive black holes both at the centre of the M80 galaxy and our own Milky Way galaxy.

Well, let’s see how it really unfolds this year! See you all on the morning (European and North/South American timezones) of October 6 for the announcement!

1
https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/about/prize-announcement-dates/ ↩︎

Last year, I turned the awesome power of the open federated social web, or fediverse, onto the question of the subject of the Nobel Prize in Physics.
