I’d take it one step further: the flu is one poignant reason why it’s critical to teach the next generation about the nature of science and its ability to solve problems and prevent natural disasters when applied critically. Such problems of the natural world were never solved by faith (the black plague is a good example), but by the application of reason to understand the connections in nature.
