## What is Physics?

Physics is the study of space, time, energy, and matter. It’s not just pendulums and bouncing balls; it’s about understanding the nature of the matter from which we are all made; it’s about understanding the relationship been the size of space and the flow of time; it’s about studying the connection between the abstract we call energy and the concrete we call matter.

Physicists are an odd sort, with their own language and their own style. While there are many lingos and dialects in physics, at our core we speak the language that best describes nature: mathematics. You may or may not think of math as a language, but it is a highly structured language whose simplicity belies the complexity of the natural world that it seems to fit so well.

## What I Do

I am a high energy physicist. I study the origin and laws of the universe by recreating conditions like those we expect to have existed near the beginning of time. Our primary instrument for this is the particle collider. I currently work with the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. We collide protons millions of times per second, and image the collisions with an 8-story-tall, 50-yard-long digital camera called ATLAS.

I am currently involved in the study of the Higgs boson, and in particular its interactions with the matter particles of the universe, the “fermions.” I contributed to the measurement of the spin-parity quantum numbers of the Higgs using the H0 → Z0Z0* → 4l channel. I  co-convened (2012-2013) the ATLAS Higgs Beyond-the-Standard Model Higgs group, and have made major contributions to the search for additional Higgs bosons in nature, especially charged Higgs bosons, H+. Most recently, my team at SMU and I have contributed to the first direct evidence at the LHC for the interaction of Higgs bosons with bottom quarks.

## Discoveries

You might ask, “Have you made any discoveries?” In fact, I have participated in two.

### The discovery of a new state of matter: the “bottomonium ground state”

Matter, when it bonds to other matter, can take on various states. Each state has an associated energy. The lowest achievable energy is known as the “ground state.” All composite matter should have such a state. In 2008, a team I co-led on the BaBar Experiment at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory discovered the ground state of the pairing of a bottom quark with its anti-matter counterpart, a bonding known as “bottomonium.” After picking very carefully through a newly accumulated data sample, we observed beyond any reasonable doubt that such a state, predicted to exist in 1977 but never seen, did, in fact, exist. As the video podcast “Minute Physics” once put it, this is not a stunning revelation; if you know crackers exist, and you know cheese exists, cheese-and-crackers may be a tasty discovery but they are hardly ground-breaking. Once you know bottom quarks and their antimatter counterparts exist, it’s not a leap to guess the bottomonium ground state is lurking in nature. The trick was seeing it, was (since it took 31 years) NOT EASY!

### The discovery that a new particle of mass 125 proton-masses is, in fact, the long-sought Higgs Boson

While I was too new to the ATLAS experiment in 2012 to be part of the discovery team, the teams that actually found a new particle existed with mass of about 125 times the proton mass, I was able to participate in the second step: measuring its properties to determine its identify. My student, Tingting Cao, and I contributed to the measurement of the DNA of the new particle – its spin and parity quantum numbers. From this work we learned the newly discovered particle has spin zero and even parity – this was as predicted for the Higgs boson almost 50 years earlier. It’s not enough to discover a new particle – you have to work hard to determine what it is. I am very proud to have played a role in that stage, and continue to play a role in studying this particle.

## Where I Work

I am an Associate Professor of Physics at Southern Methodist University. My work takes me from the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex to the CERN laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland, where I conduct research on the ATLAS Experiment. I teach physics to all kinds of students at SMU: non-science majors, pre-health students, engineers, and physics majors and minors. You can find more about my professional life on my SMU website.

## Who Supports My Work?

You support my work, through the United States Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC) and the National Science Foundation. The DOE-SC is the single largest supporter of basic research in the United States, through its university and national laboratory funding programs. In particular, DOE-SC funds 90% of all particle physics research.

Your tax dollars are hard at work, teaching us ever more about the beginning and structure of the universe. Curiosity-driven science can always use more support, though, as it does not have a strong and funded lobbying organization. Your letters to Congress are always welcome.
