Goode for America

In a recent letter to his constituents, Rep. Virgil Goode (R-VA) wrote that “The Muslim representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district, and if American citizens don’t wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran” [CBSNews]. He was speaking about why Americans should adopt more stringent immigration policies. To this, he added, “I fear that in the next century we will have many more Muslims in the United States if we do not adopt the strict immigration policies that I believe are necessary to preserve the values and beliefs traditional to the United States of America and to prevent our resources from being swamped.”

Virgil Goode can ony be good for America. He’s right – we have a problem. Pro-constitutional forces are already fighting a war on one front, trying to keep radical Christian forces out of the science classroom with their supernatural approach to the natural world. If suddenly we starting admitting millions of radical Muslims to the country, we’ll be fighing a war on two fronts! How can the pro-Constitutional forces keep up a battle when they’re being slapped with both the Bible (King James Edition, of course) and the Koran?!

Wait… hang on. Millions of Muslims? Well, that’s what it would take to get the “Muslim majority” in Congress that Goode envisioned (especially on his unapologetic exclusive Fox News interview). And, wait a second . . . I wonder if similar arguments were made when women were given the vote, or when black Americans were recognized as human beings in the 20th century? I wonder if there were Virgil Goodes in the South in the 20th century who argued that the Congress would be overrun with women and blacks?

I think Virgil Goode can rest assured that his Islamic nightmares won’t come true, even with a few more Muslim immigrants. We have a population that is 51% women [CensusSex], and a House of Representatives which is less than 15% women. The U.S. population is 12% “Black or African American Alone” (whatever that means) [CensusRace], and a House which is 9% repesentative of that ethnic group. In each case, we have huge populations of people already long underserved by their own governing body, and facing an electorate unwilling or unable to build that accurate representation. Seems to me like we’re still undoing the damage of the Strom Thurmonds and Mrs. William Winslow Crannells. Maybe if Congressman Goode spent more time finding ways to promote the underserved in our own immigration-founded society, rather than fearmongering against a religious group, we’d be somewhere with our existing population.

Oh, and one more thing Congressman. Our new representative from Minnesota, Congressman Ellison, converted to Islam after he grew up. He was born in Detroit, and was not an immigrant. Get your facts straight.
