San Francisco Chronicle runs article on the SLAC name change

The SF Chronicle has run an article today regarding DOE’s desire to change the name of SLAC [1]. Sounds like the buzz is growing. It also sounds like a popular solution is to have “SLAC” continue to be the name, while probably standing for something other than “Stanford Linear Accelerator Center”. We’ll see.

At least this solution prevents the lab from having to spend amounts of money and employee time to change all the web addresses of the lab! That seems like a lot of money to waste just to change a name. I’d hate to see the BaBar experiment’s data analysis grind to a terrific halt just because “slac.stanford.edu” goes away, which I’d speculate is possible should DOE seek to cut ties with Stanford’s name in the lab name.
