Jodi and I are both now fighting either the flu or very severe colds. We both firmly understand that the underlying cause of the symptoms – headache, coughing fits, sinus pain and drainage, body aches, and general discomfort – are invasive germs which have evolved since the last time my body encountered them. Consequently, my immune system is fighting it like hell. I therefore sound like somebody wedged cotton balls up my nose, rubbed them against my throat, and set them on fire and stuffed them in my chest.
Unlike the germ theory of disease, which has been upheld not only by direct observation but also numerous laboratory investigations, intelligent design is not science. Judge Jones, a federal court judge in Pennsylvania, has ruled that the teaching of intelligent design as science is illegal, since it is inherently a religious doctrine that cannot be clothed as science. It is inherently untestable. While its discussion in the schools is not illegal, its statement that it is science, just like evolution, is wrong. In addition, evolution is not atheistic, but rather leaves plenty of room for religious belief.
Here are the judges own words, from a CNN report:
“To be sure, Darwin’s theory of evolution is imperfect. However, the fact that a
scientific theory cannot yet render an explanation on every point should not be used
as a pretext to thrust an untestable alternative hypothesis grounded in religion
into the science classroom or to misrepresent well-established scientific
propositions,” Jones writes.
