Surviving Washington D.C.

Jack and Jill, went up the Hill

To pass some legislation,

Jack fell down, in Germantown,

and Jill hit “Face the Nation”

I just returned from a fall trip to Washington D.C. on behalf of users of
SLAC, Fermilab, and the U.S. LHC community. There were six of us, and while it would be unethical of me to discuss all that we learned on this trip I will say this: these trips get more nuanced, and more exhausting, each time. I can see how Washington can eat you up and spit you out, even when you think you’ve been prepared by years of trying to work with it.

There was good weather, unlike my trip last year [TAOMPH157] with Jodi. There was a little rain at first, and the temperature dropped rapidly over two days, but the skies were fair and the temperature good (especially for running around in a suit). This is a pretty quiet time on Capitol Hill, given that the elections are coming up and the Congress is in recess. Staffers were all business-casual, in sharp constrast to our suits and ties. I liked the contrast. I just hope they knew that we meant business.

I am very much looking forward to meetings, and research, and coffee with colleagues. I need the inspiration of discovery, and not the perspiration of politics.
