Not so long ago, my father asked, “When *was* the last time it rained where you are?” The fact that it hasn’t rained a drop on the peninsula since about April doesn’t surprise me, but always surprises folks from other places. Well, today the long dry spell is broken – it rained. It wasn’t much, but it was enough to soak the sidewalk. The first rain of the season is my favorite – when the water hits the hot pavement, it drives oils to the surface and you get this sweet, smokey smell from the roads and sidewalks. There is also that soft humidity in the air, pleasant to breathe.
Thus begins the rainy season?
