Yesterday was a pretty good day. Jodi, a friend, and I hiked from Portola Road up through the Windy Hill open space preserve to Skyline Drive at the top of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The view from the top was stellar, not only because of the expanse of the Bay stretched out before us, but also because the cloud layer enveloped us at the top. The cool layer of air refreshed us after the steep hike. The movement of the air around us reminded me that the atmosphere really is a fluid.
However, after we got back to our car, we found it had been broken into. Cigarette ash dotted the dashboard, and neither of us smoke. The passenger window had been violated with a slim jim, but no damage done to the car. The thief took canvas shopping bags, a portable CD player from the glovebox, sunglasses from the arm rest, and worst of all: my SLAC ID. We filed a report with a Deputy Sheriff, who spent a lot of time taking the report and talking to us about the break in. In fact, our experience with this minor break-in and this police department was in stark contrast with the same thing in Boston. When our car was broken into in Boston, the police mailed us the report form to file. Talk about a difference.
The theft occurred in the parking lot at the back of the Stanford Hills, at Piers Ln. across from the back gate of SLAC.
Of course, I also reported the badge stolen to SLAC. I’m hoping that since “I” am not going to SLAC this weekend, if “I” show up at the main gate “I” will be detained and my badge confiscated. I’m more worried about having two of me running around next week, when I get a new badge. This also reveals a new and important lesson: don’t forget your badge in your car.
